Matthew A. Vlasman is an associate with Matushek Nilles LLC. He concentrates his practice on product liability, and occupational injury claims, including the defense of asbestos personal injury cases. He also has experience working in other product liability fields including pharmaceutical litigation and automotive products.

Legal Experience:  Mr. Vlasman has provided zealous and efficient representation of his clients in the defense of asbestos personal injury actions throughout the State of Illinois. Upon receipt of a defense assignment, he quickly identifies those cases with the highest potential risk of liability, so that they can be properly prepared for trial. He has experience with all stages of discovery, including preparation of discovery to plaintiffs and responding to discovery requests on behalf of his clients. Mr. Vlasman regularly prepares for and attends discovery depositions and evidence depositions. Throughout the discovery process, Mr. Vlasman analyzes the available evidence to assess the viability and value of potential dispositive motions, motions to transfer venue, or motions for the application of the law of another state. Matt Vlasman regularly appears in court to represent his clients at motion calls in Cook, St. Clair, and Madison County, Illinois.

Significant results:  In a relatively unique case, Gelber v. AECOM Technology Corp., Matt Vlasman worked closely with Ed Matushek to obtain an early dismissal for our client based on contract language and corporate case law of several states concerning successor liability assumptions. In James Perry v. A. W. Chesterton, et al., he was able to elicit factual admissions from the plaintiff during his deposition despite the plaintiff's identification of our client on the premises, and nonetheless obtained a dismissal of our client from the case. In Crosier v. AERCO International, Inc., Mr. Vlasman established that the plaintiff testified about equipment that did not exist during the time period in question, again leading to a dismissal of our client.

Professional Associations: Mr. Vlasman is a member of the Chicago Bar Association.

Education: Mr. Vlasman earned his Juris Doctor, cum laude, from The University of South Carolina School of Law, where he was a Senior Articles Editor for the South Carolina Law Review, served as a teaching assistant for a section of Legal Writing and Research, worked as a tutor for the Contracts class, made Dean's List five of six semesters, and twice earned CALI awards for the best grade in a class. Matt Vlasman was a member of the Order of Wig and Robe and Phi Delta Phi, and enjoyed serving as the captain and manager of the law school soccer team, JDFC. Mr. Vlasman obtained his undergraduate degree, Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education with a concentration in English, from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana in 2005. He taught high school English, journalism, and etymology for four years before attending law school.

Admitted to Practice: Mr. Vlasman is admitted to practice before the Illinois Supreme Court.
